      Customize Start Menu

Since Win 8 we have all been deprived from our good old start menu, while the are programs to replace and bring back the old start menu, there is another start menu most people donโ€™t know about,
Right click on the start menu and youโ€™ll get a different menu with some new and straight forward options you could also get to it by clicking on Win+x.
The best part is you could customize this menu and put whichever shortcuts you wish,
For example you might want to create a shortcut for the good old fashion control panel.
      Just go to C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX
you will have 3 folders, the start menu is divided in three like this (Pic is Win ๐Ÿ˜Ž
      Windows_8_Quick_Access_Menu_Groups.png
simply replace the shortcuts in the folders with the shortcuts of your own choice.

    • RE: The PC Mouse

You have that small wheel in the middle, itโ€™s not just for scrolling,
      Click it.

      • Click on a link to open it in a new tab in your browser.

      • Click on an open tab to close the tab (usefull when you have 30-50 tabs open and canโ€™t even see the x).

      • Click in file explorer on a folder to open in a new tab.

      • Open all bookmarks in a folder at once by middle-clicking on the folder in your bookmarks bar.

      • Paste text in Firefox with a middle click, by enabling the middlemouse.paste option in about:config

    • How to pick up that lost screw

I deal allot with small electronic devices, phones PCโ€™s etc. someone told me a tip a long time ago that saved me, when that one screw falls on the floor, it could take 15-20 min of nerve wrecking searching to find it,
here goes the tip take a sock put in on the top of your vacuum cleaner, and vacuum the floor, the screw will be sucked up and waiting for you to remove him from the sock.

      Dynamic Lock

Dynamic Lock is a new feature in Windows 10 Creators Update (1703) which automatically locks your machine if you are away from the device. It works by utilizing a Bluetooth connection to your phone. If it detects you have left the machine it will lock it automatically. This is based on:

      • No user input for 30 seconds (no keyboard/mouse)

      • Will check if the bluetooth device is present (that was present during login)

      • If the bluetooth device is not present or the signal is weak which signifies the device is far away (with the user) the screen will be locked

      Setting up Dynamic Lock

To begin, you must pair your phone with your PC. To do this, open โ€œDevices and Printers,โ€ then click โ€œAdd a device.โ€ Once the phone has been paired with your PC,
an item like the Phone appears in Devices and Printers.
Once pairing is complete, you can turn on Dynamic Lock by visiting Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Simply click the checkbox under the Dynamic Lock heading that reads โ€œAllow Windows to detect when youโ€™re away and automatically lock the deviceโ€.

    • RE: Solution for no phone service in your basement

I used to have the same problem, until I found a great solution
I bought a Panasonic Phone that has a feature called Link to cell, basically it lets you use your home phone as a Bluetooth device for your cellphone,
You can place and receive calls from your home phone as your cell
so I place the cellphone by the window where it has service and use the home phone to dial and receive calls, It even alerts you when you have a new SMS.
the one I bought you can connect 2 cellphones at the same time and it works great,

Another thing we gained when my wife comes home from work she never remembers to turn off the vibrate mode until then she always missed calls, since then when the cellphone is home it will ring on the home phone.

    • RE: Freelancers worth it?

@Manual said in Freelancers worth it?:

I like Fiverr better I find there are more Americans there vs. Upwork they are mostly Indians and other Arab countries

I donโ€™t think that country of origin matters.

I have quite a bit of experience with Upwork, the most challenging part is finding the right people, I always first start asking them questions like,
How are you planning on accomplishing this task
What software and languages will you use
How many hours will it take you
      etc.

Usually, those few questions will give you an idea who knows what he is saying and who is still a beginner trying to learn
e.g. someone saying it will take him 40 hours for a simple email template (happened 2 days ago) I right away nix him.

After you shortlist a few sift through their previous works and feedbacks I always sort from Low to High so I can get a feel what people donโ€™t like about him, for example, you will find a lot of times a freelancer gets negative feedback because he never actually sticks with milestones, so I still know if I am not in a rush for the work I will still go ahead and hire him.

The most important is before hiring a freelancer WRITING out very clear instructions and what you expect of him,

@yzahn said in How to secure a server:

Do every single one… but mainly disable SSH for root (but still give your root user a strong password) and allow SSH only with key

I din’t get the point, if they will manage to crack my pass then whats the difference if it’s root on a non-root with sudo privileges? they can do whatever they wand with sudo.

@Chocolate in addition you should enable the firewall and only allow inbound connections on a as-needed basis. If you only need incoming SSH from specific IPs only enable those IPs.

Anything else to do except for whitelisting inbound connections, it’s not really possible for me to do that?

Just out of curiosity how do they manage to hack a 16 digit password that is a combination of letters caps & digits, it should take years, no?
and one more what are those guys gaining? except for them deleting a couple of files nothing changed, whats their goal?

    • How to secure a server

OK so my server was hacked!!
B"H was well prepared so everything is safe
now what and how do you secure your servers?
      what I did so far

      1. changed root password
      2. created another non-root user with sudo privileges, my question is where to go from here

should I disable SSH for root? should I change SSH port? allow SSH only with key? install Fail2Ban?

Can anyone tell me what is necessary and what won’t help in any case?

      Thanks
