Setup Built-in VPN of Windows
-
Hi Guys
I’m stuck at home atm because my wife has symptoms of the covid 19 and due to that I can’t access my office nor my pc in there. The ideal way for me to keep working is to setup a vpn connection from my home latop to the office machine. I followed the guide of this website and with some tweeks I managed o connect a VM through the LAN to that VPN.
However, when I’m trying the same through the WAN (Internet) I get a error 806 in event viewer. For now I’m using port 1723 which is the standard port for Windows built in VPN and a open port tool checker states that the port is open… However I still can’t connect to the VPN server and I’m getting the error mentioned above.
The firewall has GRE protocol allowed and the relevant ports are also allowed in the Windows Firewall. This is a screenshot of the error I’m gettijng:
Any Ideas?? Answers ae greatly appreciated as this blocks me currently of getting essential work done.
Thanks in advance and a kusheren Pesach!! -
Does anyone know about a good solution that can turn your machine into a VPN server? Easy to setup etc.
Thanks a lot! -

Thanks in advance and a kusheren Pesach!!Do you have a static IP?
-
No, but it doesn’t matter. It changes once in a month which I’m totally fine with. The problem isn’t the IP as the Host receives the connection but for some reason can’t handle it…
-
I don’t have any experience with this Windows VPN, but I did setup once a VPN server on a WIN machine with OpenVPN as far as I remember it’s fairly simple.
-
@Hacker26 Do you have an internet filter that may be blocking? antivirus?
-
No AV and no Filter. The problem happens on router level.
-
@TechWiz Could you please send me a link with some usefull instructions? I mean for the OpenVPN setup
-
@Hacker26 https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/Easy_Windows_Guide, why don’t you work with RDP instead?
-
@TechWiz In that Scenario VPN is ideal. I could setup RDP but what I really need is access to the drive rather then mirroring the screen. I work in SW development and the whole repository is there…
-
@TechWiz Thanks a lot for the link. Will take a look.
-
@Hacker26 You might be able to do it through the router, whats the model?
-
@TechWiz Can’t do it through the router. It’s the router that the ISP delivered and it’s very basic. It only has portforwarding but not really more then that.

Youcan still do dd-wrt if you want
-
@TechWiz I doubt that this Firmware is compatible with my router… A bit scared to brick the router and then I’m really screwed…

-
@TechWiz I’ll give you the honor to find out who the manufacturer of that Router is… It’s called “EE Smart Hub”…
-
@TechWiz Is OpenVPN for free?
-
